Elephant lurking in Latics’ room

James Tarkowski powers in a header at goal
ATHLETIC 0, HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 0
ATHLETIC won’t have learned much from this, a goalless draw of doom which had the word ‘tame’ running through its core.
There were few chances for either team.
Alex Cisak was forced into a couple of flying saves – and again reinforced his renewed presence as the club’s number one number one – while particularly in the second half, Paul Dickov’s side asserted a control of midfield which has to be pleasing in the context of Huddersfield’s new status as a Championship club.
There is an elephant in the room for Athletic, though, which is the real story of the stalemate.
Dan Taylor grafted hard until being withdrawn and, had Robbie Simpson managed to produce a better pass with his left foot after the break, could even have found the net for the first time in Athletic colours.
It is probably asking too much, too soon, for the 19–year–old former Newcastle man to start the season as Simpson’s strike partner.
With the on-trial Portuguese striker having returned to his homeland – at least temporarily, see back page – after this game, it is apparent to everyone that Athletic’s hunt for a number nine is of greatest importance.
The remainder of the team looks strong enough.
Jean-Yves Mvoto was probably the most impressive figure of all, bossing first Jimmy Spencer and then his more illustrious second-half replacement Jordan Rhodes and even indulging in a quick-footed dance around three players which brought the afternoon’s biggest cheer.
And Youssouf Mchangama, who may have done better with a headed effort, again gave the midfield some solidity.
Huddersfield started the game as the better side - then started the second half likewise.
But Athleticy grew and for the majority of the period were the superior team.
