Doherty ends Wild’s fine run

OLDHAM snooker ace Michael Wild’s rich vein of form continued in the European Pro Tour Championship in Germany.

The Moorside potting machine reached the last 16 of the competition — where he lost 4-3 to former world champion Ken Doherty of Ireland.

Earlier, 31-year-old Wild had beaten Jordan Brown (Ireland) 4-0, Marcus Campbell (Scotland) 4-0 and Scott Donaldson (Scotland) 4-3, a victory which included a 119 clearance in frame three.

Wild trailed Doherty 3-1, but levelled the scores at 3-3 before the vastly-experienced Irishman dug deep to clinch the deciding frame.

The tournament was won by Leicester’s Mark Selby who recorded a 4-1 victory in the final against Wild’s practice partner Joe Swail, a world championship semi-finalist when he was based in Failsworth.

Swail, who had travelled to Germany with Wild and stayed in the same accommodation, numbered Shaun Murphy, Jimmy White and Barry Hawkins among his victims.

Wild is now rated 41 on the Tour and third in the amateur ranks.

If he can stay in the top eight, he will qualify for the main professional tour next season.
