Wooton ready for next step

SCOTT Wootton has no intention of becoming fazed by the giant strides he is taking at Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson's massive defensive injury list means the 21–year–old, Birkenhead–born defender has started his first senior game and made his Champions League debut in the past 10 days.

If Jonny Evans fails to recover from his injury in Tuesday's successful trip to Cluj, Wootton could be in line for a Barclays Premier League debut at Newcastle on Sunday.

The player remains unruffled: "Obviously there are some extra special things like the team talks, coming away with the first team and the fans, which are different from what you're are used to.

"But you just try to concentrate on your football just the same," he said.

Champions Manchester City return to action in the Premier League as Sunderland visit the Etihad Stadium tomorrow.

The Black Cats were the only team not to lose in the league at Eastlands last season.

Mario Balotelli is pushing for a starting berth up front after expertly converting a last-minute penalty in the 1-1 Champions League draw with Borussia Dortmund in midweek.

The Blues — yet to keep a clean sheet in all competitions — are likely to come up against their former winger, Adam Johnson.
