BOXING:

RONNIE Heffron wants to bring the Commonwealth title home to Oldham.

The 22-year-old welterweight faces unbeaten champion Denton Vassell on the big Manchester Arena card tomorrow night, which also features the professional debut of Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff.

Bob Shannon, trainer of Ricky Hatton and Vassell, believes the latter has picked up crucial pointers from The Hitman, who lost his eagerly-anticipated comeback last weekend.

But Heffron (21), unbeaten in 11 fights, and hailed in some quarters as ‘the new Ricky Hatton’ with his exciting, all-action style, says that won’t be enough to save his opponent.

“Ricky is a big hero of mine,” said Heffron. “I know Ricky was training and sparring with Vassell and giving him advice, but that won’t do him any good in the ring against me.

“It’s just me and him in there. No disrespect to Vassell - he’s unbeaten and the champion - but this is my time now. It’s going to be a great fight for the fans.”

Heffron’s Failsworth-based trainer Anthony Farnell expects fireworks tomorrow.

He said: “Ronnie is looking better than ever and although Vassell will be his biggest test to date, I reckon he is ready for it.”
