Perfect send-off

SIR Alex Ferguson has urged Manchester United's fans to stand by David Moyes when he takes over as manager next season.

As he spoke to supporters after his side's 2-1 win over Swansea yesterday in his final game at Old Trafford, Ferguson recalled the dark days of his early years at United, when he failed to win a trophy for three seasons. He feels Moyes needs to be afforded the same slack.

"I would like to remind you this club stood by me in bad times," he said. "Your job now is to stand by the new manager."

Ferguson insists he will remain an Old Trafford regular: "I will be able to go along and watch them rather than suffer with them," he said.

"It has been a totally unbelievable experience. I have been fortunate to manage some of the greatest players in the country, let alone Manchester United."

He insisted the time was right for him to bow out.

"I wish the players every success," he said. "I know how good you are. You know the jersey you are wearing and you know what it means to everyone here."

Javier Hernandez put United ahead yesterday and though Michu equalised just after half-time, Rio Ferdinand's 87th-minute winner ensured a fitting climax to Ferguson's Old Trafford experience.

GREATER Manchester Police are urging United fans to make their Premier League victory parade a great occasion.

Tens of thousands of fans are expected to line the streets in the city centre today as the team acknowledges the crowd.
