SPORTS BETTING:

IT was nerve-jangling at times, but last night’s 2-0 victory over Poland gave England the victory which took them to the finals of the World Cup in Brazil next summer.

Surprisingly, given boss Roy Hodgson’s normally-cautious approach, England really went for it in the last two qualifying games. And that’s what they must do next summer if they are to have any chance of making an impact against the cream of the world’s talent.

It is pretty obvious that this current England team is better going forward than defending.

At times last night they were stretched by Poland though, to be fair, most alarms came on the back of England attacks which broke down.

In Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Andros Townsend and Danny Welbeck, England have a mobile and potent strike force which could reap a rich harvest if allowed to blossom on the biggest stage.

England are 25-1 to win the World Cup, which is realistic given European countries’ record on South American turf.

The hosts are the 100-30 favourites, while Argentina have to be a major threat at 5-1.

The powerful Germans are 5-1, while Spain - holders of the World and European crowns – can be backed at 13-2. Rapidly-improving Belgium are only 14-1, followed by Holland and Italy at 22s and England three points bigger.
