THE England senior team weren’t the only ones celebrating tournament success last night.
The national Under-19s team – which featured Chadderton’s Ben Pearson – qualified for the Elite Group stage of the UEFA European Championships thanks to a 1-0 victory over Switzerland at the Mestni Stadium in Ptuj, Slovenia.
Derby County striker Mason Bennett provided the all-important goal which meant Noel Blake’s Young Lions topped their qualifying group.
Former Boundary Park Juniors player Pearson came on as a second-half substitute.
The Manchester United midfielder scored twice in a 7-0 win against Andorra on Saturday.
Meanwhile, former Crompton House School pupil Ryan Kent scored twice for England Under-18s as they thumped Hungary 4-0.
Kent, from Royton, scored both his goals in the first half as the visitors were well beaten in a friendly fixture at the national St George’s Park base in Staffordshire. Attacking midfielder Kent has been with Merseyside giants Liverpool for the last decade.
