SPORTS BETTING:

RUGBY League’s World Cup gets under way this weekend and, not surprisingly, the mighty Australia dominates the betting market.

The wonders from Down Under are 1-3 to lift the trophy, with New Zealand at 4-1 and England 7-1.

It’s 175-1 bar the three, so that tells you all you need to know about tournament.

England warmed up for the event with a disappointing defeat by Italy.

I doubt England, despite the expertise of Oldhamer and captain Kevin Sinfield, have enough in their locker to upset either of the two Antipodean nations.

Australia are 1-4 to win that game, which is completely understandable, with England 7-2 and the draw at 25-1.

MANCHESTERS United and City are in Champions League action tonight. United have the easier assignment against Real Sociedad, while City take on CSKA Moscow away.

United are 4-7 to win, with a draw 7-2 and defeat 6-1.

As for City, I think a quote of 3-4 about victory in a decent team’s back yard is pretty poor.

The hosts are 4-1, with the draw 29-10.

City striker Sergio Aguero, tipped in this column for the Premier League’s Golden Boot at 8-1, has already scored seven goals this season and is down to 11-2 for the accolade.

United’s Robin van Persie remains the 9-2 favourite.

As for the league title, City are the 15-8 favourites, followed by Chelsea at 11-4, Arsenal on 5-1 – quite generous, those odds – Liverpool at 9-1, United at 10s and Spurs on 14-1.

Whoever would have thought that Liverpool would be a shorter price for the title than United?
