ENGLAND are out to 8-1 (from 7-1) to win the Rugby League World Cup after their defeat to Australia on Saturday.
England led 10-0 before Australia came roaring back so at least the hosts showed they can compete with the Green and Golds.
Australia have been eased slightly from 1-3 to 4-11, while New Zealand are 4-1 after their 42-24 defeat of Samoa in which Manu Vatuvei scored a hat-trick of tries.
The Kiwi is the 6-1 favourite to be the competition’s top try scorer, a fair price given how quickly he has raced out of the starting blocks.
RUGBY Union’s autumn internationals get under way this weekend when England, who include Oldhamer Kyle Eastmond in their ranks, entertain Australia in front of a sell-out 82,000 crowd at Twickenham.
Amid calls to make Twickenham a fortress in time for the World Cup in 2015, England can take a step towards that goal by justifying victory odds of 8-15. Australia are 9-5.
