FA CUP third-round weekend beckons and with it the potential for giant-killing acts.
Athletic certainly fall under that category, but the bookies make them a whopping 21-1 to win at Liverpool on Sunday.
Manchester City, who go to Blackburn in the third round, are 5-1 favourites to lift the cup, with Chelsea on 11-2, and Manchester United – who host Swansea – and Liverpool joint third-favourites on 15-2. Arsenal are 9-1 and Everton – under the guidance of last year’s winning manger, Roberto Martinez – are 14s.
I can’t see United winning the Premier League or Champions League, but new boss David Moyes will be desperate to keep the wolf from the door by clinching some silverware in his first season.
The Reds have shown signs of increased stability in recent weeks and the FA Cup – and Carling Cup, of course – gives them their best chance of success.
The 15-2 is perfectly fair given this is a squad which won last season’s Premier League title in runaway fashion.
ATHLETIC may be hovering just above the relegation zone in League One, but the bookies reckon they will pull away if the 6-1 quote about them being relegated is taken at face value.
Lee Johnson’s men look a much better team than their league position suggests, but their home form has to improve if they are to climb the table.
A win at home to Shrewsbury tomorrow would be a good start and they are rated even-money shots to achieve their goal.
RECOMMENDATION: Manchester United to win FA Cup, 15-2 (Coral).
