Thunder count the cost of slow start

MANCHESTER Thunder paid the penalty for another slow start as they slipped to a 55-51 loss at home to Team Bath in the Zeo Superleague.

The hosts simply could not find any rhythm and, with several unforced errors, they handed Bath an early lead.

Captain Sara Bayman was trying desperately to rally her troops, and slowly but surely they clawed their way back in to the game. A flying interception from Laura Malcolm inspired her team and they narrowed team Bath’s lead to just two goals, finishing the first quarter 16-14.

It was same story in the second quarter, but Thunder’s errors were punished this time, with Bath extending their lead to 33-26 at the break.

Thunder rang the changes at half time. Krista Enziano was introduced at goal shooter, Rachel Henry took the wing attack spot, while Beth Cobden moved to wing defence. Emma Dovey slotted in at goal defence.

The home side immediately showed a new vigour and better movement in the third quarter.

Bayman and Henry had more success at finding the shooters, and Enziano converted the chances.

Thunder managed to level things up, only with a couple of late goals by Bath to stay ahead at 42-40.

In the final quarter, Helen Housby replaced Kathryn Turner.

Again, Thunder were again sluggish out of the blocks, giving Bath two easy goals, before upping their game.

Bath’s Pamela Cookey had other ideas and, dictating play, guided her team to victory.

Thunder’s next match is away to Yorkshire Jets on Friday.
