United utility man relishing New Year test

MANCHESTER United utility man Phil Jones is expecting a rough ride at Stoke City tomorrow in the Premier League’s opening clash of New Year’s Day.
The Reds edged to a 2-1 Old Trafford victory against Mark Hughes’ Potters only a matter of weeks ago, and a similar stern test awaits Jones and his team-mates again in a match which kicks-off at 12.45pm.
England man Jones said: “It will be a difficult battle down there. We know what Stoke are about and what it will be like. Every game in the Premier League is a physical test, but we will prepare right and recover well, and hopefully we will get the three points.”
Manager Louis van Gaal has reinvigorated United during his first six months in charge by introducing a host of new players and plans.
Halfway through the season, with the Reds third in the table, his philosophy appears to be working.
And the manager certainly appears settled in Manchester: “English life is fantastic,” Van Gaal said with a smile. “I have met only friendly people on the streets and in the restaurants where I go. I have very nice neighbours.”
