Quality lacking at Reds – Keane

FORMER Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane believes Louis van Gaal’s current side are “lacking some characters” following their exit from the Champions League.

United were beaten 3–2 by Wolfsburg, conceding some sloppy goals. Keane was scathing in his assessment of a side that spent over £100million in the summer and will now drop into the Europa League.

The Irishman said: “It’s a disaster really, considering the goals they gave away. I think United have a lot of good players, but I don’t think they are good enough for Man United.

“I think they lack real quality. You look at the recruitment; they have thrown decent money at it, but there are no special players.

“Think of Manchester United and you’ve always associated it with one or two special players who can produce. They seem to be lacking a few characters, a few leaders.”

Keane believes Van Gaal shouldn’t shoulder all the blame: “The manager is getting a lot of criticism, but it’s about the players as well. The goals they conceded on Tuesday night were from set–pieces.

“That’s not about tactics or systems, that’s about doing your job.”
