Starlet Cam’s got what it takes

MANCHESTER United’s teenage star Cameron Borthwick–Jackson has already proven he has the mettle to handle the big stage, according to team–mate Chris Smalling.

Borthwick–Jackson (18) has made only half a dozen appearances for the Reds and his only senior starts came at Bournemouth and in the FA Cup against Sheffield United.

He was a substitute in the 1–0 win over Liverpool, and it was the player’s mature showing at the home of United’s bitter rivals that convinced Smalling his defensive colleague can handle the spotlight.

“He showed he is ready for a stage like this,” the England international said. “He has been drip-fed quite a few games this season and he has done very well. To be able to perform like he did shows he is ready for any game.”

Injuries have left United depleted in defence this year and Van Gaal has been forced to use inexperienced players at Old Trafford. But centre back Smalling says Borthwick–Jackson needs little guidance.
