A retired Royton fireman was today due to set off on a gruelling cycle challenge.
Garry Dutton and three friends are cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) to help raise money for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity and The Fire Fighters Charity.
Team Lardy Boy, made up of Garry (54), Garry Jones, and Patrick Connaghan, both of Ashton; and Rick Warburton, of Bury, are taking part in the 1,000-mile challenge in aid of the hospital after Patrick’s daughter, Kitty, received life-saving treatment there in April last year.
The four, who hope to cycle 100 miles a day, will also donate 25 per cent of any money raised to The Fire Fighters Charity.
Garry, who retired from the service three years ago, said: “Land’s End to John O’Groats seemed a fitting challenge to raise money to thank the hospital for saving Kitty’s life.”
