Wrapping paper sparks mill fire
Date published: 10 May 2011
FIRE broke out at Nile mill in Chadderton yesterday as large quantities of wrapping paper went up in smoke.
Business owners had to be evacuated from their units at the mill, in Fields New Road, during the dramatic mission to save the building.
Three crews from Oldham, Chadderton and Hollins battled the blaze in a storage unit of the ground floor at about 12.40pm.
A business owner had been burning waste outside the mill when, according to reports, embers drifted back into the unit causing the inferno.
Workers had to exit the building as smoke spread to other rooms on the same floor, but crews managed to contain the fire damage to the storage space.
They used two hose reels, a jet, ladder and breathing apparatus to aid them in dampening the flames.
