Mary Hassall on zip slide
GRANDMOTHER Mary Hassall pulled off a daring stunt to raise £600 for the Christie Hospital.
The 64-year-old, who has five granddaughters, undertook the 30-second feat which saw her dash airborne across Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground.
Her initial anxiety as she was clipped on to the zipwire turned to exhilaration as she hurtled suspended above the ground, while husband Brian and her friends and family cheered in support.
The mother of two sons, Simon and Jonathan, said: “When I got up there I thought ‘O My Gosh,’ but I knew I had to do it so I just got on with it.
“It only lasted for 30 seconds, I went that fast, it was exhilarating.”
Mary, who lives in Broadway, Chadderton, wanted to say thank-you to the Christie for the care and support she received when she had surgery and treatment for breast cancer 10 years ago.
The money raised from the event is to support the Christie’s Teenage Cancer Unit, and Mary said: “Christies has always been close to me, and when I read what they were raising money for I just felt I really needed to do it.
Mary is not the only local daredevil gran to undertake the zip wire challenge. Betty Meredith (75), a great-grandmother from Garden Suburb raised around £700 for the Christie when she took part in the same event.
