Flying the flag is a feast of fun

A JUBILEE jamboree saw youngsters at Firwood Manor celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 60-year reign in stylish fashion. Pupils at the Chadderton school enjoyed a street party with crowns, bunting, flags and a fancy feast.

The school playground was awash with red, white and blue as the children celebrated.


MUD and wellies at Firbank School in Royton failed to bog down spirits at the official opening of their Jubilee Garden. Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Olwen Chadderton, and Oldham Youth Mayor Chantel Birtwistle joined staff and pupils in waving their Union flags. The party included a picnic and a treasure hunt, as pupils wore red, white and blueto brighten up the grey skies.

HEADTEACHER Michelle Lee was transformed into a queen for a Jubilee party at Burnley Brow Primary School, Chadderton.
Pupils wore red, white and blue, staff dressed as members of the royal family and the celebrations included maypole dancing and a special lunch.



CULINARY wizards at Hulme Grammar School made 60 trifles to celebrate 60 years on the throne for Queen Elizabeth II.
Pupils made special red, white and blue versions of the classic English dish to mark the Diamond Jubilee. Head of food Deborah Howarth said: “It was fantastic to get the school together to celebrate the Jubilee. “There was a real community buzz.”


MEMBERS of FaB (Failsworth and Beyond) WI went back to the Fifties for their Jubilee party with food typical of the era — including spam sandwiches and jelly. The event at Middleton and Chadderton Sea Cadet Unit with members who were old enough reminiscing about their memories of the Coronation, including the thoughts of one seven-year-old who sheltered under a policeman’s cape at the side of the mall.
