GOAL . . . Josh Law
ATHLETIC 1, GILLINGHAM 0
JOSH Law's first-half free-kick tipped a tight game Athletic's way, handing John Sheridan victory in his first game back at the helm.
The midfielder shaped an effort from just outside the area over the wall in the 39th minute to beat Stuart Nelson.
Connor Ripley had to be alert to save low to his right from Max Ehmer's acrobatic overhead kick shortly before the interval.
Lee Erwin then forced a low save from Nelson just after the hour with a far-post header and Law had the Gills 'keeper stretching to tip over his 30-yard set-piece.
Bradley Dack fired a free-kick wide and headed too close to Ripley as the visitors pressed.
Law hit the crossbar in added time, but a single goal was enough to get the Sheridan reign off to a flying start.
