Both Oldham MPs expected to vote against Prime Minister's Brexit deal

Both of Oldham’s MPs are expected to reject the Prime Minister’s withdrawal agreement in the Commons Brexit vote later.

Debbie Abrahams, who represents Oldham East and Saddleworth, and Jim McMahon, who is the MP for Oldham West and Royton, are understood to be voting against the deal.

Both backed Remain in the 2016 referendum.

It’s expected Theresa May will suffer a crushing defeat when her Brexit bill goes before the House of Commons this evening, despite last-minute appeals to rebel Tory MPs to back her deal.

Data suggests she will lose by an estimated 226 votes – based on MPs stating their intentions of how they will vote.

However, there could be some who abstain and some MPs could change their minds in the time before the vote.

The vote is taking place at 7pm.

Rejecting the agreement would leave open the possibility of exiting the EU with no deal.

The UK is due to leave the EU on the 29 March 2019.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is likely to call a vote of no confidence in the government if the withdrawal agreement fails to get through.

But the Prime Minister insists she has no intention of leaving or calling a general an election.

She will come under pressure to come up with a back-up plan should she fail to get the approval of parliament for her proposed deal.

Mrs May admitted her deal was “not perfect” in a statement to the House, but appealed for ministers to take a second look, saying it was “a compromise”.

There is likely to be several votes on amendments – such as the Irish backstop – which could also affect the final vote.

The original vote was postponed from before Christmas.
