Volunteers cleaning up Wade lock in Uppermill

Date published: 18 January 2019

A group of hard-working volunteers have spent their first meeting of the year making a towpath in Uppermill safer for the people who use it.

Those who give up their time for Uppermill Community Action Network – known as UCAN – have been clearing compacted fallen leaves from the towpath near Wade lock.

Other work includes clearing vegetation, picking up litter and wildflower seeding around recently-cleared areas of the viaduct woodland.

They’re now appealing for more members to help them out in future meeting, saying there is “still more to do” to keep the area tidy.

They say volunteering in the local environment is a great way to meet other local people and enjoy exercise and fresh air.

The group has two meetings in February and two more in March.

All equipment is provided by the Canal and River Trust – and anybody who wants to join the group is recommended to wear stout footwear and suitable clothing for the weather.
