Officers say they became aware of the post during Saturday morning and made urgent enquires to try to establish who made it.

A short time later, at around 1.43pm, a 24-year old man was arrested on suspicion of sending malicious communications.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “This is a very difficult time for people. The events in New Zealand have reverberated around the world. Many people are in deep shock and are worried.

“It is at times like this that, as a community, we stand together.

“Where the law permits and people cross the line, we will take robust action, which may include arrest and prosecution.”

The 24-year old was questioned and has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

It was on Friday morning in Christchurch, New Zealand, when a gunman burst into two Mosques and started firing.

It left 50 people dead and many more injured, Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, appeared in court on Saturday charged with murder.
