Tommy Robinson event: Police continue to investigate

The disturbance in Limeside last Saturday

Greater Manchester Police say they are continuing to investigate a disturbance at a Tommy Robinson campaign event in Limeside last Saturday and are appealing for help from the public.
 
Officers responded to the incident, during which a number of objects were thrown.  Two police vehicles were damaged in the disturbance.
 
Police have launched an operation – Operation Woodville – to investigate.
 
Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, Mabs Hussain, said: “Given the level of public disorder seen last Saturday, Greater Manchester Police has set up a dedicated team – including specialist detectives from our Major Investigations Team, as well as local officers – to identify those responsible for criminal behaviour during the disturbance last Saturday.  

 
“We know that a number of people present travelled some distance to Oldham. As such, this investigation will include extensive enquiries both across Greater Manchester and with partners elsewhere to ensure that those involved in any criminal acts are brought to justice.
 
“We understand and respect the right to demonstration and peaceful protest. However we won’t accept it when this crosses the line into criminal behaviour.
 
“I’d like to thank those who have already been in touch with officers and would encourage those who have any information, footage or images that will assist our investigation to make contact.
 
“By working together we can, as a community, grow stronger and support the criminal justice process.
 
“I want to reassure our communities and our partners across Oldham that we will do everything we can to gather evidence and arrest those who have committed crimes, causing such fear and disruption.
 
“Enquiries are already well underway and we expect to provide further updates in the coming days as the investigation progresses.”
