Former Oldham Athletic manager fined for betting on football

In all Scholes admitted placing 140 bets between August 2015 and January 2019

Former Oldham Athletic’s manager Paul Scholes has accepted a fine of £8,000 from the Football Association after he admitted placing more than 100 bets on football over the course of three and a half years.

In all the former Manchester United midfielder admitted placing 140 bets on the game but denied he knew what he was doing was against the rules.

Scholes had been charged with breaking betting rules after it was alleged that he’d placed the bets between 17th August 2015 and 12th January 2019, about a month before he took over at Boundary Park.

In a statement the 44-year old said: “I would like to apologise and I understand and fully accept the fine imposed by the FA,"

"It was a genuine mistake and was not done with any deliberate intention to flout the rules.

"I wrongly believed that as long as there was no personal connection between me and any of the matches that I bet upon, then there would be no issue.

"However I understand now that this is not the case and I should have taken steps to verify this at the time."

Scholes took the reins at Oldham Athletic in February before walking out and quitting 31-days later.

The Football Association has also warned him as to his future conduct.
