Saddleworth woman receives British Empire medal

A modest woman who is to receive a coveted royal award shared the joy with a tiny Saddleworth hamlet.

Jennifer Greenwood, 71, was initially shocked to be told she was to receive the British Empire Medal in the Queens birthday honours list.

So with the help of local hotel owner, Charles Brierley, she decided to throw a thank you party for enthusiastic residents  who  supported the community group - Love Lydgate established in 2009 - of which she is the chair and secretary.

Speaking at the get together in Lydgate parish hall, which was attended by more than 50 locals, Jennifer said: “I decided to accept the award as it recognised just how much had been  achieved by the Lydgate community. 

“I felt it was an award for everyone. Love Lydgate has
been in existence 10 years and has transformed the look of the place but it  isn't just the tangible things that matter. 

“You can't see community spirit but you can feel it — and you can feel it in this room tonight.

“And when asked if they wanted to continue the work of Love Lydgate, there was a resounding cheer and a unanimous  ‘yes’!”

Charles Brierley, owner of the White Hart at Lydgate told guests: “Jennifer always praises the villagers and their marvellous efforts.

“She is very self effacing but in reality it is her driving spirit, passion, support and commitment to various initiatives that has helped  Lydgate achieve a warm, welcoming ‘can do’ appeal.”

And, to a round of applause, he added: “In every sense she is very deserving of the award.”
