Travel advice ahead of sport events this weekend

Date published: 10 September 2019

TfGM offers travel advice as Greater Manchester plays host to a range of high-profile sporting events this weekend (14-15 September).

It promises to be another busy weekend for sports fans as Greater Manchester plays host to two cycling events and another sell-out football match at Old Trafford.

The weekend’s events get under way on Saturday (14th September) when the region hosts the final stage of the 2019 OVO Energy Tour of Britain.

The event includes almost 2,000 metres of climbing, including the famous climb of the Rake at Ramsbottom, before finishing on Deansgate.

Given that the event takes place across all 10 districts then some localised road diversions will be in place.
To help people get around while the event takes place, TfGM are providing travel advice throughout the week on both our website and across our social media channels.

On Saturday afternoon, Manchester United take on Leicester City at Old Trafford and it’s expected to be busy as usual with 75,000 football fans in attendance meaning that roads and public transport will be busier than usual, especially the Metrolink network.

On Sunday (15 September), Manchester city centre welcomes back the annual HSBC Let's Ride cycling event. With up to 15,000 people expected to get involved over the course of the day, it promises to be another fantastic, if busy, day for the city.

As part of the event there will be lots to see and do in the city centre – from fun activities and challenges for the whole family to music, local street food and live stunt shows.

To support the traffic-free event, which is intended to encourage as many people as possible to get out on their bikes, Manchester City Council will be closing a number of roads between 6am and 6pm.

Stephen Rhodes, TfGM’s Customer Director, said, “While we may be approaching the end of an amazing summer of sports and entertainment events, this weekend looks set to be another busy one - with some fantastic events taking place, that will increase demand on our roads and across the public transport network.

“Greater Manchester is proud to host the final stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain on Saturday and the HSBC Let’s Ride on Sunday but both will see localised road closures. On top of that we’ll also see thousands of fans travel to Old Trafford to see United play Leicester City on Saturday.

“Commuters across the region are reminded to check before they travel, allow more time for their journeys and to use public transport wherever possible. They can also stay up-to-date with live travel information on our website and on Twitter on the day.”
