Local MPs react to Supreme Court decision on the prorogation of Parliament

Date published: 24 September 2019

The Supreme Court has decided the Prime Minister's decision to suspend Parliament for five weeks was unlawful.

The court decided unanimously that there was no "reasonable justification" for stopping parliament doing it's work.

Local MPs have reacted to the decision- Oldham East and Saddleworth's MP Debbie Abrahams commented on the ruling saying- “This decision is a victory for democracy. Parliament is sovereign not the Executive.

"On that basis I'll be back in Parliament tomorrow.

"Johnson must now resign. He’s been found to have acted unlawfully.”

Oldham West and Royton's MP Jim Mcmahon took to twitter to have his say on the matter tweeting- "It was utterly shameful to place the Queen in such a position for the advice to be found unlawful by the Supreme Court.

"The Prime Minister must resign. Parliament must now meet.

"Johnson must now resign. He’s been found to have acted unlawfully.”

MP for Stalybridge and Hyde Johnathan Reynolds also took to his twitter account to highlight his feelings- he quoted, "To live in a country governed by the rule of law is a very special thing."

MPs will be back in the Commons from 11-30am tomorrow morning.
