Cllr Jamie Curley, left, presents the coveted Above & Beyond award to Rob Tortoishell, OMRT leader.
The chief of the courageous force of heroes who tackled devastating moorland fires and braved storms said their latest community accolade was “the icing on the cake.”
Modest Rob Tortoishell, leader of the legendary Oldham Mountain Rescue team, was speaking after receiving a prestigious Above and Beyond award.
The award, given to groups or individuals who go the extra mile to help others, was sprung on the unsuspecting team at their annual dinner by Councillor Jamie Curley, chair of Saddleworth parish council and an Oldham ward councillor.
The award citation highlighted the volunteers spent 780 hours on the storms and 1698 hours on wildfires working tirelessly in appalling and extremely dangerous conditions without a thought for themselves or their own safety.
The Above and Beyond jade plaque and framed certificate is presented to groups or individuals who go the extra mile to help the community.
Candidates are chosen by Saddleworth villagers then judged by a panel of ward councillors and the Saddleworth and Lees District Team.
Presenting the award, cllr Curley said Above and Beyond is an award that really mattered as it is was from the community as a thank you and recognition of dedicated service.
He recalled the team have been here, on call 24 hours a day, since 1964 and all the 50 members are volunteers who give up their time and the team receives no public funding but relies on donations and grants to keep going.
And currently OMRT are raising £65,000 for a new control vehicle.
Rob said: “We were absolutely delighted to receive the award — recognition in this way makes us feel proud.
“It is the icing on the cake of what has been an excellent year for the team - celebrating our 55th anniversary and the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.
“I'm once again humbled by the ongoing support given to us by the local community.
"It is this support that helps us continue to help others.”
