Officers from Greater Manchester Police will come together with rugby stars from the North West and beyond for a 13-hour football & rugby marathon in support of Mahdlo.

Oldham born and current Salford Red Devils player Mark Flanagan, will join former rugby league player Barrie McDermott, and the Welsh Wizard Iestyn Harris, in taking on Greater Manchester Police’s finest for the day long fundraiser.

A number of former players will also be taking to the field as part of legends teams from the local area. Mahdlo will also be fielding a staff team at the event which will take place at Mahdlo on Egerton Street in Oldham, on 25th January from 7am – 8pm.

In addition to a bumper day of sport, Mahdlo will also be running a New Members Day between 10am – 1pm, where young people and their parents can come into Mahdlo and take a look at what goes on during a Saturday session for free.

All young people will also get a voucher to enjoy a free slush while they take in the Youth Zone and cheer on the Greater Manchester Police team.

Claire Crossfield, Fundraising Manager at Mahdlo Youth Zone, said, “Greater Manchester Police have supported Mahdlo for the last three years with their marathon events and this promises to be the biggest one yet.”

“Our relationship with Greater Manchester Police and in particular the Oldham Town Centre Policing team and St Mary’s is crucial in promoting a strong positive relationship between the police and our young people.

Damieon, Danny and the rest of the GMP team are such a fantastic influence on our members and we are so grateful to them for their continued support.”

Damieon Hartley-Pickles, Police Constable at Greater Manchester Police, added, “Both myself and Danny have worked in Oldham for several years and have the same desire and ambition to put the youth of Oldham back on the map and help them excel in a safe environment.

“What we learn becomes part of who we are and what Mahdlo does to assist the kids of Oldham is invaluable and we are extremely proud to be a part of it. This is our third marathon event fundraising for Mahdlo and will total 50 hours of none stop sport!”
