Shaw and Crompton marks Holocaust memorial

Holocaust memorial service at Shaw and Crompton

On Monday, members of the community of Shaw and Crompton came and “Stood Together” to remember those were who were killed in the Holocaust and the many other genocides across the world, at the Crompton War Memorial.

“This year’s theme was “Stand Together” and that is exactly what residents, Councillors, primary school children and young people did, whilst listening to Rev Katy Cunliffe from Holy Trinity lead us in the service,” said Councillor Diane Williamson, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Crompton.

The reason for this event is to make sure that future generations understand the causes of the Holocaust and reflect upon the consequences. 

This was why two pupils from Crompton House School, read the stories of two survivors – Ivor Perl and Sokphal Din and one of the pupils from Farrowdale House School read a poem, entitled “Hope for the Future”.

Before the service ended, those present laid stones on the War Memorial as is the tradition within the Jewish community - which many believe that placing the stones on a grave would keep the soul down in this world.

“It is always a pleasure to stand together with the community and commemorate those who lost their lives and those who suffered or are still suffering.

“Thanks to Reverend Katy who lead us through the thought-provoking service.  We must all hope that there is a safer future and that lessons have been learnt,” added Cllr D Williamson.
