Crolla heart-broken after fire destroys Failsworth mill

Date published: 30 March 2020

Former world boxing champion Anthony Crolla has admitted his 'heart is broken' after his recently-purchased gym was among several businesses destroyed in a devastating mill fire.

Firefighters were called to Morton Mill in Failsworth at about 5.20am yesterday (Sunday).

At the height of the blaze, around 40 firefighters were on the scene.

Pictures and video of the blaze showed flames shooting above the rooftops of surrounding buildings.

It's now believed around 10 small businesses, including a number of gyms, a furniture store and a sign writing firm, are based in the 106-year-old mill.

Former WBA world lightweight champion Crolla Crolla Tweeted: "Thanks for everyone who’s got in touch regarding the gym.

"Phones gone mad so will get back in touch with u all soon as I can but they’re all appreciated.

"My heart is broken not just for all the kids but also for friends who’ve lost their livelihood/businesses in the building."

An investigation into the possible cause of the huge fire is ongoing.

Early indications are that it is being treated as a 'possible crime scene'.
