Statement released from Yousef Makki's family following IOPC's ruling

Date published: 30 April 2020

Yousef Makki's family have released a statement after the IOPC announced they have discontinued their investigation into Greater Manchester Police's handling of his murder investigation.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct confirmed they found no potential misconduct by any individual officer, and acknowledging that a number of changes to procedures will be implemented as a result of learnings identified by the internal review.

The statement released from his family said:

"On 27th April, the Independent Office for Police Conduct informed our family that their investigation concluded that no misconduct could be identified by any Greater Manchester Police officer involved in the investigation into Yousef's murder.

"This news comes following a lengthy family meeting with the CPS, Greater Manchester Police and Cheshire Police at the end of January, during which our family came to understand that there were some accepted failings with GMP's investigation.

"We look forward to a meeting with GMP to understand their findings and hopefully be reassured that lessons really have been learned.

"We have also learned that the IOPC are yet to conclude their investigation into the manner in which Cheshire Police conducted themselves in relation to Yousef's death - and that this remains an active investigation.

"We remain cautiously optimistic that the findings of this separate investigation may provide us with some much-needed accountability from the authorities, at a time where our confidence feels like it has hit an all time low.

"At present, the Coronavirus outbreak is making it extremely difficult for families like ours to get justice for their loved ones, in part due to the delay in legal proceedings and the need for us all to self-isolate.

"The added isolation we are all experiencing at this time does, on bad days, prove challenging to remain head strong - but with our extended family, friends, supporters and legal team remaining committed to getting justice for Yousef, we remain hopeful that a full inquest into Yousef's death will go ahead to uncover the answers our family so desperately deserve.

"The fight for justice must go on."
