Oldham Lifelong Learning gives tech boost to learners

Date published: 10 February 2021

Oldham Lifelong Learning is providing tablets and internet access bundles to support adult learners who are struggling to access courses online.

Runa Lyla is among the first 60 Oldham Lifelong Learning students to have benefitted from the scheme.

She said: “I’m very excited to loan a Samsung tablet. I’m on a Level 2 Functional English course and use it to do my work on.

“I only had my phone for remote learning and my four young children have also needed to use it for home learning during lockdown - making it difficult to complete my work on time.

“The new tablet has made life much easier and meant I can continue with my education.”

The scheme has been made possible thanks to £50,000 funding from Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

Oldham Lifelong Learning provides education to thousands of adult learners every year across a wide range of subjects.

It has continued to offer remote and online learning throughout the pandemic to existing and new students.

Cllr Mohon Ali, Deputy Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills, said: “Everyone has the right to an education but unfortunately many people are digitally excluded.

“We are so pleased to launch this loan service - we don’t want a lack of equipment to stand in anyone’s way.

“Whether you want to learn to boost your confidence, support your health and well-being or progress your career, the scheme will ensure hundreds of residents can learn from home.

“We will continue to do whatever we can to support our residents’ learning goals. If you think we can help you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”
