MP McMahon welcomes new Council Leader

Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon has welcomed the news that Councillor Arooj Shah has been elected as the new leader of Oldham’s Labour Group and therefore set to be confirmed as council leader on May 19.

Mr McMahon, himself a former Council Leader before Jean Stretton took over after his election as MP, has backed Cllr Shah to guide Oldham residents towards better times ahead.

“I am immensely proud that Cllr Arooj Shah is set to become the Leader of Oldham Council with Cllr Amanda Chadderton serving as a new Deputy Leader, alongside Cllr Abdul Jabbar," said Mr McMahon.

“Rightly, Cllr Shah’s major pledge is to 'clean up Oldham' and make it a clean and cared for place to be proud of.

“Getting the basics right and setting the standard is essential.

"Like many residents I too feel dispirited and angry when I see litter strewn around and fly tipping blighting our area.

"It is clear that in parts it has got out of control.

"It is time to make those who ruin our town pay, so that the majority of us to live in a clean and cared for town.

“As we emerge from the pandemic our recovery will be fragile and we must use all of our energy to support local businesses to grow, and to support new businesses set up by local people who will invest back into our town.

“I want to add my thanks and best wishes to outgoing leader Sean Fielding.

“Our borough has so much potential - let's set it free.”
