Oldham school's sea of colour marks the end of Pride month

Oasis Academy Oldham turned into a sea of colour when staff celebrated the final few days of Pride month by wearing their brightest or rainbow themed clothing.

Over the course of the month of June, staff and students acknowledged the issue of equality and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in a variety of different ways.

Children had a special assembly and PSHE lessons discussing the importance of respect for all people and their individual rights.

There have been various different LGBTQ+ flags hanging in the main social space of the academy, and children enjoyed a rainbow cake sale and keyring making activities.

Mrs Gemma Bolton-Hale, the PSHE curriculum lead, said: "As part of our broad and balanced character curriculum, we take every opportunity for our students to learn about the world around them and celebrate the diversity within it.

"We believe strongly in educating our children for life, and one way we do this is to embed values of equality for all people of all backgrounds, and Pride month is one great and fun way to do this."

Mrs Marie Dillion, academy principal, agreed.

She said: "Oasis Community Learning was built on the foundations of the principle of inclusion, so it goes without saying that when it comes to Pride month, we delight in celebrating it.

"I have been wearing my pride wristband all month to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community."

The cake sale made a small profit which has been used to donate food to the Oasis Hub foodbank that serves the local community, which the staff and students felt was another great outcome of the Pride events.

Molly, a year 11 student that had recently left OAO, came back in for the day to run the cake sale and said: "It was so lovely to come back into do this.

"I felt it was important to do it and I am glad I did."
