Endurance runners Matthew O’Connor and Joe Hughes have successfully completed an epic 412-mile, nine-day running challenge across Britain. The pair crossed the finish line at the West Midlands Safari Park this weekend, raising thousands for childhood cancer charity, The Azaylia Foundation.
Averaging nearly fifty miles a day along Britain’s canal towpaths, the extraordinary effort from two of the charity’s key community supporters will help The Azaylia Foundation continue its vital mission funding life-saving treatments, backing pioneering research, and standing beside families during their darkest times.
Along the route, Matthew and Joe stopped at four major children’s hospitals, Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Oxford Children's Hospital, and Birmingham Children's Hospital. At each stop, they hand-delivered Jessie’s JoyJars, bringing them to the UK for the very first time. The plastic jars, filled with brand-new, age-specific toys, games, and activities, successfully brought much-needed moments of joy, kindness, and comfort to children undergoing treatment on the wards.
Matthew O’Connor, commented: "We knew how hard this was going to be, but crossing that finish line is a feeling we will never forget. Every time our legs wanted to give up, we thought of the children we met on the wards. We ran for the kids who can't, and seeing the support from everyone over the last nine days has been overwhelming. We just want to make sure these families know they aren't alone."
The emotional nine-day journey reached its climax on Sunday, 27th September, perfectly coinciding with The Azaylia Foundation’s fifth-anniversary celebration. As Matthew and Joe crossed the finish line to the cheers of over 400 attendees, the charity marked a monumental milestone of five years of dedicated support for families navigating childhood cancer. The celebration featured live music from Sol and the Gang and Jason Allen, alongside a special mural painted live by Mr Murals.
