Denton close in on more KO Cup glory

Denton are one step away from retaining the Oldham Golf League ‘A’ team KO Cup after a resounding 4.5-0.5 semi-final success over Stamford.

They got off to a flying start when Jack Suttie and Reece Hobson were 5-under for the first four holes at Ashton, and wrapped up a comfortable 4&2 success.

Andy Hurst and Darren Whiteley (5&4), John Stapleton and Luke Amos (3&1) and Scott Irving and Ellis Ostheimer (3&2) followed suit, and captain Nigel Brookes and Jordan Wood were level on the last, but agreed a half as a dead rubber.

They will now meet Dukinfield in the final after Richard Whyatt’s side won 3-2 in a thriller with Ashton at Denton with three of these games going all the way.

Whilst the ‘A’ cup is an all-Tameside affair, the ‘B’ Cup will be between two Oldham clubs.

Oldham inflicted a first defeat of the season on Dukinfield at Crompton and Royton with a 3.5-1.5 win that saw four of the five games reach the 18th green.

Oldham sneaked it with three last-green successes thanks to A Ashew and M Stoneman (1up), J Phillips and S Ogden (1up) and D Kendrick and A Harrison (1up)  which meant the match involving D Ganley and S Warburton was a dead rubber having reached the 20th all square.

It was tight in the other semi with C&R getting the better of North Manchester 3-2 at Dukinfield with wins via Ian Harrop and Barry Anderson (2&1), Barry McLoughlin and Liam Grogan (3&2), and captain Gary Lamont and Rob Riley (3&2).

A CUP semi finals: Denton 4.5, Stamford 0.5 (@Ashton); Dukinfield 3, Ashton 2 (@ Denton).

B CUP semi finals: North Manchester 2, C&R 3 (@ Dukinfield); Dukinfield 2, Oldham 3 (@C&R).
