The Saddleworth School Year 11 basketball team were crowned champions of Oldham as they fought off stiff opposition from 12 other teams at the annual seniors basketball tournament at Failsworth School.

Led by North-West of England representative Harry Sheehan (pictured holding the trophy), the Saddleworth Red team recorded seven wins and one draw during the afternoon, before defeating Waterhead A team by ten points in the final.

Earlier they defeated Crompton House in the quarter-finals and Blue Coat in their semi-final encounter.

Joe Burston added a gold medal for basketball to the one he had won in rugby just 24 hours earlier, in itself a very successful personal achievement.

The event saw Failsworth, Waterhead, Saddleworth, Radclyffe, Crompton House and Blue Coat Schools all enter two teams each, with the 13th team in attendance being from Newman Academy.

This marked the most successfully attended basketball competition in recent years within the borough, and led to a very competitive and worthwhile event taking place involving over 100 players.

Saddleworth's Yellow team comprised of all Year 10 players, and they fared well, registering four wins and three defeats, which put them in overall sixth position, with Harry Jenner being voted player of the tournament.

The next tournament will be held on Thursday, November 17, at the Brierley Avenue venue, and will see the Year 9 teams in the borough battle it out for the trophy.
