Oldham cruise to welcome victory against gutsy young Ormskirk outfit

Date published: 13 March 2023

Rampant Oldham thumped Ormskirk 78-0 in what was another bottom half of the table clash at Manor Park.

Oldham started the brighter from a scrum on their own 22, and Dinky Fitton, back at scrum half, made a searing break with great support on the right-hand side.

This led to it going from right to left for skipper Jack Taylor showing his versatility on the wing to touch down.

Converted by Alex Jobson, this was a great start for Oldham.

Dean McEwan, who is having a great end to the season, made a now trademark break to get a Oldham back up the pitch.

Some great lead up play led to Phil Conroy going over for Oldham’s second.

The returning Andy Joy made a barrelling break which led to Nick Hackman picking up for the next try.

Converted by Jobson, Oldham were now looking comfortable.

Ormskirk then had their best passage at the Oldham line, but resolute defence kept them out.

However, Oldham lost Rhys Jones to a yellow card for not releasing.

From an Ormskirk lineout on their 10 metre line, Ryan Pickles then picked up and outpaced the defence, showing excellent pace.

As Oldham got back to 15, they then lost Ryan Arundale to another sin bin for not letting go.

Pickles scored his second following a nice inside pass from Joy, converted by Jobson.

A great cheer then came as Dean McEwan was at it again, breaking from inside his own half, exchanging passes with Fitton, only to be brought down inches short.

Oldham spun it wide for Taylor’s second try, again converted by Jobson.

Oldham were 38-0 up at half time.

The second half continued much the same, with Oldham taking control, and Stuart Brennan ran the most superb of lines to score the first of the half.

Some great controlled play helped Rob Froggatt to go under the posts, converted by Jobson.

Arundale was also rewarded for his perseverance with a try when the ball was stripped from a Froggatt burst, again converted by Jobson.

A trademark lineout catch and drive led to another Froggatt try, with Jobson adding the conversion from out wide.

A further try came following a kick through for Jobson, who was first there to touch down and then add the conversion.

Oldham were then back in the Ormskirk half, making another try for Froggatt as he danced over following good work from Rhys Jones, and Taylor for his hat trick, again converted by Jobson.

That was to be the final score of 78-0.

To their credit, Ormskirk are a young team who never gave.

Oldham went back to doing what they do well, playing well off the forward structure and pattern, and a few smiles from the coaching staff could be seen.

Cam Wood was awarded man of the match for his ball carrying and gritty defence and hard work up front.

Wigan at home next week will present a tougher test.
