Crompton and Royton Golf Club proved their usual excellent hosts for the latest Scroungers Golf Society charity event.

The Scroungers have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds over the past 30 years to buy powered wheelchairs for young people with severe disabilities.

Scroungers official Syd Barton, a former Captain of Saddleworth Golf Club, said: “The bulk of the Scroungers come from local clubs in the Oldham and Tameside areas, and this was the 203rd chair we have presented,

“C and R gave great support to the day and a warm welcome to all of the players and the day’s recipient, Joseph Green and his family.

“Joseph is 18 and lives in Moorside and suffers from cerebral palsy, epilepsy and he is also deaf and he was delighted to receive the high-tech powered wheelchair.

“The event was supported by Crompton and Royton GC, the council, green staff, pro’s shop and all the goodwill of the members.

“Wednesday is ladies day, but since 2014 this event has been held on ladies day and adopted every year, by every lady Captain.

“Next year will be the 10th year anniversary. Quite an achievement!

“We were also pleased to see Rodney Wild in attendance.

“Rod, due to bad blood circulation, had to have his foot amputated, ironically on his 84th birthday.

“Rod is our longest serving member (stalwart) and he has been Captain, President, handicap secretary etc over the years.”

Meanwhile, C and R ladies played over two rounds for the ‘major’ President’s Prize, and round one saw Emily Halstead set a hot pace with 71, from Janet Wright 75 and Jean Clarke 76.

In round two Carolyn Williamson led in with 73, two less than Janet Wright and Joanne Redford.

The proud winner was Janet Wright 150 from Jean Clarke 151.

The subsidiary 9-hole winner was Audrey Whittaker 39, two less than Glynis O’Brien and Jacqueline Conboy.

A singles Stableford for C and R’s men had the divisions topped by David Briddon 38, Gary Lamont 41 and Tony Froggatt 37.

A singles Stableford at Saddleworth had the divisions topped by Stewart Potts 40, and Nathan Mills after a cpo on 38, with Mike Ralph and Urik Stondin 41.

Saddleworth ladies played a singles Stableford and Jade Jackson was too hot to handle with 42, seven more than Fiona Hesten.

The ‘Road to Formby’ Stableford at Saddleworth had the divisions led in by Mark Abbott 41, Alan Ramsden 39 and Steve Goodwin 41.

The Two Person Aggregate Shield at Saddleworth was close with Jon Barnes and Andy Wilde on top with 76, from Stephen and Ben Pullen 75 and David Chapman and Paul Baddeley 74.
