Latics regain Academy status

Date published: 23 July 2025

Latics have confirmed that the club’s academy has been granted a Category 3 Licence by the EFL.

As the academy regains its EPPP status following the club's return to the Football League, the achievement marks a significant moment in its aspirations to continue growth.

It follows the first-team's promotion at the end of the 2024/25 campaign and sits firmly within the vision outlined as part of the wider SportsTown project.

The move to Category 3 status elevates Latics’ academy provision, unlocking new opportunities to work with younger age groups and be in the position to offer an elite football pathway for local young players.

The new category allows the club to operate teams from Under-9s to youth team, significantly expanding its reach and impact across the borough and beyond.

Phil Arebelo-Dolan, Academy Manager, expressed his pride in the achievement: “This is a realy proud and significant moment for the football club having the academy back.

"Gaining Category 3 status is a vital step in the continued progession of the club and the backing of Darren Royle and the Rothwell family has allowed us to achieve this moment.

Mr Royle, Chief Executive of Latics, said: “This is a landmark moment for our football club.

"One of our central aims as part of the SportsTown project has always been to improve our academy operations and invest in youth development as a pillar of long-term success.

"Gaining Category 3 status reinforces our commitment to building a sustainable football club with a strong identity and a thriving connection to its community.

"I would like to thank Phil and the academy team, as well as our operations and facilities staff, who have worked tirelessly to meet the EFL’s criteria and raise our standards.

"It’s a huge credit to them and a sign of the positive direction we’re heading in.”

The club will now begin the process meeting the demands of a fully-functioning Category 3 academy.

With the new academy structure in place and the first team preparing for life back in the EFL, momentum is building across all areas of the club and the future looks brighter than ever.

Open training sessions will take place during the week beginning the July 28 for youngsters looking to join the academy.
