Crompton and Royton's Corey Pearson is the new Oldham and District Scratch golf champion.

Pearson chipped in twice for birdie 2s – once from the bunker at the 4th and again from off the green at the 16th - on his way to a fine level par 70 in windy conditions.

Other birdies at the 2nd, 7th, 8th and crucially the 18th saw the 0.3-man pip fellow C&R man Scott Bloor who also birdied the last for a 71 to finish runner-up.

Third place went to three-time champion Kris Sutcliffe with a 73, while four-time winner and reigning champion Lee Rowbotham peppered the flags early on but could not get the putts to drop

And when he pressed at the start of the back nine two three-putt bogeys at the 12th and 13th saw his chances slip away and he faded to a 76.

The home club produced a clean sweep of the scratch competition prizes as the best nett was won by James Booth (75-5-70) with Rick Ollerton (77-6-71) runner-up.

And with such a strong presence C&R easily retained the Brierley Cup team trophy for the best four scores from one club - Corey Pearson (70), Scott Bloor (71), Kris Sutcliffe (73) and Gary Melling (74) for a 288 total.

C&R did not have things all their own way in the Centenary Trophy – the stableford competition run alongside the scratch.

For much of the day, Brookdale veteran John Hughes was leading with 40pts, but Oldham’s Paul Hewitt came in with 42 pts - the highlight of which was a nett eagle at the 1st.

The divisional prizes were: 1st division (-1-10), - Lee Booth (C&R) 39pts cpo; 2nd division (11-16) Sam Clancy (C&R) 39pts cpo; 3rd division (17-28) Bernard Lees (C&R) 40pts.

The two nearest the pins were won by Liam Lovell (56cm @4th) and Glynn Broady (142cm @6th).

The host club C&R were praised for presenting the course in superb condition for over 150 competitors on the day.
