Corney exits chairman position at Athletic

Date published: 08 May 2018

After 14 years in charge of Athletic, Simon Corney has exited his role as chairman of the Boundary Park club.

The news was revealed in a brief club statement this morning.

It read: "Oldham Athletic can today announce changes at the senior level of the football club.

"Following today’s Shareholder Meeting, Simon Corney is no longer the Chairman of the football club and has been removed from his position on the Board of Directors."

No further comment was to be added by the club as Corney finally departs Athletic having jointly taken control - with Danny Gazal and Simon Blitz - in 2004.

Gazal and Blitz left Athletic in 2010.

Corney's days at Athletic had been numbered since Abdallah Lemsagam took over as owner and majority shareholder in January.

At that time, club chief executive Mark Moisley acknowledged that while Corney was no longer in control of Athletic, he was to remain for a few months to help with the transitional period.

At Mr Lemsagam's unveiling on January 26, Moisley said: "Simon will still be involved over the next few months.

"He'll be helping and advising because he's obviously got a lot of experience in the game,

"He's run the club for 14 years and he'll be very useful for Abdallah, so it's beneficial in that respect."
