Trialist's strike sinks Girona

Date published: 25 July 2018

An early penalty from a trialist was enough to give Athletic a win over La Liga side Girona in a behind-closed-doors friendly fixture last night (Tuesday).

The trialist put Frankie Bunn’s side ahead from a penalty in the opening moments of the game, before the Spanish side tested Athletic's on trial goalkeeper.

A number of smart saves and good defensive work at the back proved to be enough for Athletic to record another pre-season win.

Athletic's high pressing caused problems for Girona early in the game and in the third minute a trialist worked hard to intercept the ball in the Spanish side’s penalty area before playing a smart pass across the six yard box for Johan Branger-Engone.

His first-time shot was blocked on the line by the Girona defender, who was ruled to have handled the ball by the referee.

The resulting penalty was converted comfortably for what proved to be the decisive goal.

Bunn’s men maintained their unbeaten run in the build-up to the new League Two campaign, which begins on Saturday week (August 4) with a home fixture against MK Dons.

Athletic's final pre-season friendly match takes place on Saturday (3pm) when they welcome Championship side Preston to Boundary Park.
