Surridge to miss Morecambe trip

Date published: 23 August 2018

Striker Sam Surridge is set to miss Athletic's League Two clash away at Morecambe on Saturday.

The exciting 20-year-old Bournemouth loanee has endured a stop-start spell at Boundary Park since his arrival just before the campaign kicked-off.

Surridge bagged impressively against Macclesfield Town on Saturday, but a hamstring injury then forced him out of the game with Yeovil on Tuesday.

It was initially hoped that the striker may return for the game against Morecambe this weekend, but Bunn has now revealed he will again be missing.

The Athletic boss said: "Unfortunately it will be another week. It's a bit disappointing because we thought we had him back but then he felt it again prior to the game on Tuesday.

"We have to look after his welfare and try not to rush him back. It was a good performance from him against Macclesfield and we were thinking 'right let's kick on,' but then he pulls up with the hamstring injury.

"He's disappointed too because he wants to play and score goals and that's what he's come here to do.

"He was missing for around 10 days with the other hamstring injury he suffered, but this time it's a different area with the soreness.

"It's not as bad as the first one, but we'll be airing on the side of caution."

The subject of attacking midfielder Jack Byrne was again aired at this morning's Athletic press conference.

Byrne hasn't featured since the first game of pre-season, and last week the club confirmed it was because the Irishman has breached some discipline rules.

The 22-year-old has been training with the youth team, and it looked like Athletic would soon be looking to move him on before the loan window shuts next week.

It now appears that won't be the case, with Bunn revealing that he doesn't expect any players to depart before the loan window shuts.

Bunn said: "There will probably be none going out. We've had no enquires [for Byrne].

"Ideally I'd like a couple in, whether we get that I don't know, but we are searching."

Giles Coke was also missing in midweek, and Bunn revealed the midfielder was sore after last weekend's game with Macclesfield, with Coke set to be assessed again tomorrow (Friday) to see whether he'll be fit for the Morecambe clash.

Andy Taylor is fine to play despite suffering a cut head in the draw with Yeovil on Tuesday, and at the moment there aren't set to be any other fresh injury concerns for Athletic ahead of the trip to the Globe Arena.

Athletic will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to four matches at the weekend.
