Another goalless stalemate for Athletic

Date published: 03 October 2018

Athletic dropped out of the League Two play-off positions despite securing a hard-earned goalless draw at Mansfield Town.

Frankie Bunn's side remain unbeaten on the road after a second goalless away draw in four days, but they had to dig deep to earn this latest potentially valuable point.

Dave Flitcroft's Stags dominated the game, creating a wealth of chances, but they failed to find a finish on the night just four days after hitting four past Northampton.

Otis Khan turned a CJ Hamilton cross against the bar from six yards after just eight minutes.

Tyler Walker was then agonising inches wide when sent through by Danny Rose's flick after 19 minutes.

Athletic 'keeper Daniel Iversen then made three excellent saves to twice deny powerful near-post shots from Hamilton and a powerful Walker effort after Rose had won a loose ball.

Early in the second half, the visitors at least had a couple of shots as substitute Jose Baxter volleyed over and Rob Hunt fired inches wide.

For Mansfield, Mal Benning fired Will Atkinson's far-post cross into the side-netting early in the half while, just before the end, Atkinson agonisingly sent a diving header wide from four yards from ex-Athletic striker Craig Davies's left-wing cross.

Athletic return to action at Boundary Park this weekend as they welcome John Sheridan's Carlisle United.
