Athletic skipper Peter Clarke
The 37-year old has been taking an active role in decisions while academy manager Pete Wild fills in as caretaker manager of the club.
But speaking ahead of the trip to Fulham in the FA Cup on Sunday, Clarke said the job opening has come at the wrong time for him: “I love being out there, I love playing. I think now as times moved on to do the two roles together would be very, very difficult. I’m happy playing I’m not saying no never but at this moment in time I’m loving my football, I’m enjoying being out there.”
Stepping into management would almost certainly have brought an end to a playing career which has spanned 20-years from his days at Everton and covered more than 700 games.
It leaves the door open for someone else to come into Boundary Park including the likes of current bookies favourite Steven Pressley and John Askey.
Revolution News understands no decision on a successor to Frankie Bunn has been made by the club, however they have had a lot of interest in the job.
