Oldham Athletic take on Northampton Town at Boundary Park on Saturday (4th April) to bring the curtain down on their season but for two players their career on the pitch at Latics could already be over.
Peter Clarke and George Edmundson picked up injuries during the 2-0 defeat at Newport County on Tuesday night with Head Coach, Pete Wild warning it could force both of them to miss the last game of the season.
That could also signal the end for the defensive pair, who’ve developed a great relationship together at the heart of Latics back four.
Peter Clarke’s contract is due to expire come the end of the current campaign with the Oldham Chronicle understanding that Oldham won’t be offering the 37-year old a new deal despite Clarke wanting to play on.
Speaking ahead of the visit of Northampton, Pete Wild paid tribute to Clarke: “Pete has made a phenomenal impact on the club, leads as a role model on and off the pitch, any young player in the game looking to get into the game or establish themselves in the game should look no further than Peter Clarke, he’s the ultimate role model for this football club and many players across the country.”
George Edmundson still has a year to run on his current deal at Boundary Park however it’s expected they’ll be bids for his services from a number of clubs over the course of the season.
The 21-year old has already caught the eye of the likes of Sunderland, Preston North End and Stoke City after impressing during his first full season with the senior side.
If the pair do leave Boundary Park during the summer, it’ll leave two massive holes at the back for the club to fill prior to the start of the new season.
