Latics swoop for Scunthorpe striker Nuttall

Latics have signed Joe Nuttall on a contract until 2025.

With nine goals to his name so far this season, the striker arrives at Boundary Park from Scunthorpe United for an undisclosed fee.

The transfer of the 25-year-old, who was born in Bury and spent two-and-a-half seasons at Blackpool, significantly strengthens the attacking options of David Unsworth’s side.

“Being honest, Joe is the player I’ve wanted from the very start. It’s taken a bit of time, but it is well worth the wait,” the Latics boss said.

“I’m very excited to have Joe on board and he’s a brilliant signing for us.

"I really like him as a player and have done for a number of years.

“He’ll be a top striker for us, he fits the profile of player that we want perfectly.

"He does the hardest thing in the game, which is score goals, and a lot of work has gone in to getting him.

“I’d personally like to thank the board for their work and I hope the fans are as excited as I am about the signing.”

Nuttall began his career in the academy at Manchester City, where he spent two years after joining at the age of 16.

He then moved to Scotland with Aberdeen, initially as a youth team player, before making his professional debut in 2016.

He had loans at Stranraer, where he scored twice, and Dumbarton, before returning to England with Blackburn.

Nuttall spent two seasons at Ewood Park, scoring 14 goals in 15 appearances in PL2, earning him a call-up to the first team squad.

His exploits in front of goal saw him shortlisted for the PL2 Player of the Season in 2018 whilst also making 13 senior appearances.

The following season he scored twice in ten games for the Rovers first team as they earned promotion to the Championship.

He moved to Blackpool for an undisclosed fee at the start of the 2019/20 season, spending time on loan at Northampton, before a move to Scunthorpe at the start of the current calendar year, scoring 11 goals in total.

“I’m really pleased to be here and can’t wait to get out on the pitch and training ground with the lads and play in front of the game,” Nuttall said.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity.

"This is obviously a big club and it’s always nice when a manager has shown this amount of interest and hopefully I can repay him on the pitch.”

Nuttall is unavailable for the next two games as he serves a suspension.

Latics' scheduled home National League fixture against Torquay United on Sunday is still on as at Friday afternoon.

However, the current Greater Manchester cold snap, which looks set to last until at least early next week, has already claimed a number of tomorrow's (Saturday) EFL fixtures, including the ones at nearby Rochdale and Salford.
