Fondop special earns Latics a point

Date published: 26 January 2023

Mike Fondop's stunning second-half leveller earned Latics a point as they hit back to draw 1-1 at Aldershot Town.

Fondop let fly from 30 yards to equalise three minutes after the restart after Inih Effiong had put the Shots in front.

Effiong's 28th-minute strike was his 17th goal of the season and swiftly followed his hat-trick in the midweek win at Maidstone.

He came close to doubling the Shots' lead in the 77th minute when he got behind the Latics defence, but saw his shot cleared off the line.

Then Latics almost grabbed the winner against the run of play in the 89th minute when Joe Nuttall got a touch in a goalmouth scramble but dragged his effort just wide.

David Unsworth's side are now three points clear of Gateshead in the final National League relegation berth.

Latics return to action on Saturday when they host Yorkshire rivals FC Halifax Town.

Meanwhile, the club has confirmed that goalkeeper Magnus Norman has signed a new contract until the summer of 2025.

Norman joined Latics from Carlisle United last summer.
